a SAT like entrance test for IIT’s , NIT’s and other engineering colleges

IIT JEE , the Entrance Exam for IIT’s has a great history,The JEE has evolved considerably from its initial pattern approximately 45 years back. Initially, there were 4 subjects in JEE, the English language paper being the additional subject. During the period from 2000 to 2005, the JEE also had a screening test in addition to the JEE main examination in order to reduce the load on the JEE main examination by screening only about 20,000 top candidates since more than 450,000 students appear for the JEE each year. In 1997, the JEE was conducted twice after the question paper was leaked in some centers.

In September 2005, an analysis group of directors of all the IITs announced major reforms in JEE, implemented from 2006 onwards. The new test consists of a single objective test, replacing the earlier two-test system. The candidates belonging to the general category must secure a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in the qualifying examination of the XIIth standard organized by various educational boards of India. Candidates belonging to SC),  (ST) and Physically Disabled (PD) categories must secure a minimum of 55% in aggregate in the Qualifying Examination.

At the IIT council meeting held on wednesday, the council agreed that there should be a single entrance Test, something on the lines of Scholastic Aptitude Test, held by US government for admission to UG courses. Similarly it is contemplated that there will be a common entrance test for all the engineering colleges in India  and that 12th marks will be given weightage for the admission,  if State boards agree for the same or else the Ministry of HRD will go about implementing the same for just IIT’s and NIT’s.

Will the standard of the questions asked presently in IIT entrance exam would change?

  • Devashri Mehrotra

it would be great decision to make it a sat like admission test and a single entrance test for all the engineering institutes across India and consideration of 12th boards marks is also a wise decision because students have been neglecting their 12th boards performance in order to crack the various competitive exams …I am undoubtedly with the government.
