The National Institute of Technology Karnataka, NITK formerly known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), is a public engineering college at Surathkal, about 20 kilometres north of Mangalore. It was founded in 1960 as KREC while today, it is one of the 30 National Institutes of Technology in India and is recognised as an Institute of National Importance.

Facilities at NITK

The National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal is a residential Engineering college. It provides hostel facilities to all the students of the college. Separate Hostel Blocks are provided for girl students. The NITK has eleven hostel blocks in all. There are six hostel blocks for the under-graduate boys, two for post-graduates and three for girls. There are a total of one thousand four hundred (1400) U.G. students, three hundred and ten (310) P.G. students and nearly two hundred girls staying in the various hostel blocks of NITK hostels.

The campus network backbone reaches all hostels and the Institute is giving network connections to all hostels in phases.

To support the varying tastes of the students who come from all over the country, seven messes of different types are provided in the hostel blocks with the necessary infrastructure of men and materials. The different types of messes provided are the Mysore Mess for South Indian style, Bombay Mess for North Indians and the Non-Vegetarian Mess. The Hostel provide for full participation of students in the management of the mess, as its beneficiaries. The mess expenditure is shared on dividing basis. All hostel blocks have been provided with external telephone facilities. There are two (one for incoming calls and the other for outgoing calls called using the India Telephone card) external phones and an internal phone for each block. Each block is provided with a color TV with cable connection. The ladies hostel block in addition to the above facilities are provided with washing machine and a computer center with ten computers connected to the internet through the campus wide optical fiber network.

The library, with a floor area of 2,758 Sq mtrs., is segregated into two wings. Periodicals, journals and bound volumes are accessible in the Western wing, while books are housed in the Eastern wing. Three reading halls which can accommodate a total of 600 students provides the peaceful and friendly atmosphere for absorbing the knowledge available through books.

A computer terminal provided at the counter near the entrance can be used to gain information regarding status of availability and particulars of any book. The in-house activities of the Library have been computerised using the LIBSYS software. A bar-coded system of issue and return of books is currently in use.

Events at NITK

The two most famous annual events are Engineer (a national level technical symposium) and Incident (a cultural festival). These events are planned, organized and managed by the students themselves – from fund collecting drives to the final events. The intra-college events are organized by the students’ activity clubs.

The biggest intra-college event is called the Crescendo, which is a cultural festival organized by the Reading Room Committee. Students vie with other years in literary, personality, art and music competitions. Crescendo has been an annual tradition for three decades.

The Rotaract Club[10] conducts social, cultural and technical events for the students and club members alike.

NITK also had its racing team which participates in SAE BAJA.Last year its sister team NITK Racing FSAE participated in FSAE Michigan US 2011,the toughest circuit In the FSAE calendar .The only team from India to Participate.

Dance Dramatics and Fashion Club (DDFC) organises the annual Spandan fest which provides students a platform to showcase their talent at dance and theatre.
