Om carried out an experiment to find out how the number of batteries would affect the number of paper clips attracted to the electromagnet shown below.

(a) What pattern would Om observe about the number of batteries and the number of paper clips attracted to the electromagnet?

(b) With two batteries in the circuit, predict the number of paper clips that will be attracted to the electromagnet if the steel nail is replaced with an aluminium nail. Explain your observation.

(a) Electromagnet is made using a magnetic material, electrical wire and a battery. The electromagnet can be made stronger by increasing the amount of electricity flowing in the electrical wire. Therefore, when the number of batteries is increased, the magnetic field is increased and the number of paper clips attracted to the electromagnet is also increased.

(b) Aluminium is not a good magnetic material, therefore the magnetic field created will be weak. When there are two batteries in a circuit connected to an aluminium nail, the number of paper clips attracted to it are less compared to the previous case.
