People of Prairies: The Prairies were once the home of pastoral native Indian tribes who reared cattle. Ranchers and farmers who came as immigrants had set up large cattle farms called ranches and sheep farms. Dairy farming for milk and especially butter and cheese is practised in areas south of the Great Lakes. In the Corn Belt, Mixed farming is common.

People of Velds: The original first inhabitants of the Velds were pastoral people who killed wild animals and raised cattle. Then the Bantu and later the European colonists settled in South Africa. Farming and raising of cattle were their major occupation.

For hundreds of years, agriculture formed the foundation of the economy. But during the $19$ th century, the search of gold and diamonds attract new settlers from Europe. Gradually mining became a vital activity alongside cattle and sheep rearing.
