Growth refers to a permanent increase in size or volume, accompanied by an increase in the dry weight of a living organism. In a plant, specifically multicellular, growth is accomplished in three distinct phases, they are:

Formative phase or phase of cell division: In this phase, cells of meristematic tissue divide mitotically, producing a lot of new cells. The apical and intercalary meristems help the plant to grow in length. Division of lateral meristem results in growth in thickness.

The phase of cell elongation: In this phase, cells that are formed by mitosis enlarge in length and volume. The enlargement of the cell takes place due to increased turgor pressure as well as due to the increase in the plasticity of the cells. The plasticity of the cell wall increases due to the softening of the wall material under the influence of some hormones, thereby allowing osmotic pressure within the cell to stretch them further as more water enters the cell. Consequently, with the appearance of the vacuole, the cell becomes osmotically active and allowing more water to enter the cell and as a result, the cells increase in size.

The phase of cell maturation: In this, the cells become specialised to give rise to different types of cells and tissue and become mature.
