Explain froth flotation process used for concentration of ores.

The principle of this technique is based on the ability of the metals to change the surface tension of water, because of the surface activity the metallic material sticks to the foam. Now the density of the foam is less than the density of the gangue. Therefore, the mineral rises up with the foam while the gangue sinks at the bottom of the tank.

In this method the crushed and ground ore is taken in a big tank. Sufficient quantity of water and foaming agent like pine oil or detergent is added into the tank. Compressed air is passed through the mixture. The air agitates the mixture, so that froth is formed. The particles of the mineral stick to the froth, rise up to the surface and overflow. The froth containing valuable ore is collected in another tank. This technique is used for the concentration of sulphide ores.
