The gastric juice acts on food and kills the germs in the food, and breaks down proteins into peptides by the action of the enzyme pepsin.

The semi-liquid food is sent to the small intestine, whereby the actions of bile juice, pancreatic juice, and intestinal juice, the complete digestion of food takes place.

The bile juice emulsifies the fat molecules and is broken down into fatty acids by the action of pancreatic lipase.

The other pancreatic juices and intestinal juices act on peptides, fats, and disaccharides. The undigested food is passed to the large intestine, where excess water is reabsorbed and is further egested through the anus.
