An electric bell is the most common application of electromagnet. An electromagnet is a magnet produced by passing an electric current through a coil wound around a soft iron core.
Construction and working:
1. An electric bell is a device that consists of two switches one is outside the bell, and another is inside the bell and consists of the parts S and T.
2. When the switch outside the bell is pressed, the current starts flowing through the core which produces the magnetic field. This causes the electromagnet to pull the springy iron strip S.

3. As soon as the strip moves towards the electromagnet, its contact with the terminal T is lost This breaks circuit inside the bell. So, the electromagnet stops attracting the iron strip.
4. The strip returns to its original position and makes contact with T. This closes the circuit, and electromagnet attracts the strip once again.
5. This forward and backward motion of the hammer and metal strip produces the ringing sound.
