The solid object with two parallel and congruent polygonal faces and lateral faces as rectangles or parallelograms is called prism. The solid object whose base is a polygon (of any number of sides) and lateral faces as triangles is called pyramid. A prism or pyramid is named after its shape of the base. If the number of sides of the base is 3 , then the shape of the base is triangle. Therefore, the prism is called triangular prism which has five faces and the pyramid is called triangular pyramid which has four faces. If the number of sides of the base is 4 , then the shape of the base is a quadrilateral. So, it can be square, rectangle, parallelogram, trapezium etc. Therefore, the prism can be square prism, cube, rectangular prism, cuboid, parallelepiped, trapezoidal prism etc. and the pyramid is called square pyramid, rectangular pyramid etc. If the number of sides of the base is 5 , then the shape of the base is pentagon. Therefore, the prism is called pentagonal prism which has seven faces and the pyramid is called pentagonal pyramid which has six faces. If the number of sides of the base is 6 , then the shape of the base is hexagon. Therefore, the prism is called hexagonal prism which has eight faces and the pyramid is called hexagonal pyramid which has seven faces. If the number of sides of the base is 8 , then the shape of the base is octagon. Therefore, the prism is called octagonal prism which has ten faces and the pyramid is called octagonal pyramid which has nine faces.
