There are five steps involved in the process of Nutrition in Animals.
These are Ingestion, Digestion, Absorption, Assimilation and Egestion.

1) Ingestion: Humans take in food through the mouth. The mouth contains, teeth, tongue and salivary glands which plays an important role in mastication (preparing the food into bolus). The process of digestion starts in the mouth with the help of saliva secreted by the salivary gland.

2) Digestion: The food is chewed and masticated in the mouth. The salivary glands secrets digestive juice called saliva in the buccal cavity. During digestion in the buccal cavity, starch present in the food gets converted into sugar maltose. The food passes through oesophagus and stomach to the small intestine, where most of the nutrients are absorbed.

3) Absorption: The nutrients present in the digested food is absorbed by the finger-like projections on the inner wall of the small intestine are called villi. These villi increase the surface area for absorption. The digested food passes through the blood vessels of the villi and enters the bloodstream.

4) Assimilation: The incorporation of the absorbed nutrients into the cell components is called assimilation. Energy from the food is produced in the cells.

5) Egestion: The undigested food moves from the small intestine to the large intestine. It removes most of the water and salts from the waste by absorption. The remaining waste is moved to the rectum, this waste is called faeces which are removed through the body by the anus. This process of throwing waste out of the body is called egestion.
