A fertilised egg is the first cell of sexual reproduction that undergoes several changes directing towards the development of an individual. There are the following two ways of foetal development-

Oviparity- It is the process in which the animals lay a fertilised egg. These eggs are kept warm by their parent either by sitting on them or by coiling around them. A suitable temperature promotes the hatching of eggs into a juvenile. Birds and reptiles exhibit oviparity and are called oviparous animals.

Viviparity-It is the process in which the animals give birth to a young one. The entire process of development of an individual (from fertilisation to foetal development) takes place inside the body of females. The period of foetal development inside the uterus is called pregnancy. Mammals and humans exhibit viviparity and are called viviparous animals.
