Dehydration is a process in which the water molecule is removed from a compound. Ethanol with the formula C 2 H 5 OH can be converted into ethene by dehydration with concentrated sulphuric acid. Concentrated sulphuric acid acts as the dehydrating agent in this reaction as it removes one water molecule from ethanol. Thus, the first reaction is a dehydration reaction. Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons with double bonds. Unsaturated compounds generally undergo addition reactions, such as the addition of chlorine. Effectively addition reaction removes the multiple bonds by the addition of atoms or groups of atoms. Ethene undergoes the addition of chlorine to give 1 , 2 -dichloroethane as the final product.
