A lead storage battery consists of a lead anode, a grid of lead packed with lead oxide $(P b O_{2})$ as the cathode and a $38 %$ solution of sulphuric acid $(H_{2} S O_{4})$ as an electrolyte.
Battery is in use, the cell reactions occur
At anode: $P b (s) + S O_{4}^{2 -} (a q) ⟶ P b S O_{4} (s) + 2 e^{-}$
At cathode: $P b (s) + S O_{4}^{2 -} (a q) + 4 H_{}^{+} (a q) + 2 e^{-} ⟶ P b S O_{4} (s) + 2 H_{2} O (l)$
The overall cell reaction is given by,
$P b (s) + P b O_{2} (s) + 2 H_{2} S O_{4} (a q) ⟶ 2 P b S O_{4} (s) + 2 H_{2} O (l)$

Battery is charged, the reverse of all the reactions occur
At anode: $P b S O_{4} (s) + 2 e^{-} ⟶ P b (s) + S O_{4}^{2 -} (a q)$
At cathode: $P b S O_{4} (s) + 2 H_{2} O \to P b O_{2} (s) + S O_{4}^{2 -} (a q)$
