The forces can broadly be classified into two types, contact forces and non-contact forces.
i. Contact forces are the type of forces that require the two objects to be in physical contact with each other.
ii. Non-contact forces are those forces that do not require any physical contact between the two objects. These can also operate when the two objects are at a distance.

The contact forces can be further subdivided into two types:
a. Muscular force: It is the force involved when a push or pull on an object takes place due to the muscles of the body.
b. Force of friction: It is the force that comes into play when an object moves over the surface of another object.

The non-contact forces can be further subdivided into the following categories:
a. Magnetic force: It is the force which a magnet exerts on another magnet or magnetic material.
b. Gravitational force: It is the force with which the earth pulls all the objects towards itself.
c. Electrostatic force: It is the force between two charged objects.
