A thermometer is a device for measuring the temperature of an object. In order to measure temperature, we use a substance that has a property that varies considerably with changes in temperature. For example, in conventional thermometers, using the principle of the expansion and contraction of liquids, mercury and alcohol, is used for measuring temperature. Mercury is the only metal that exists as a liquid at room temperature. When mercury is used in a thermometer, the slightest change in temperature can be noted. The high boiling point of mercury makes it suitable to measure high temperatures. The gases have a very high coefficient of expansion. Hence, they are not suitable for measuring the slightest changes in temperatures.
