The pore-like structures that are present on the surface of the leaves are called stomata. These structures help in the gaseous exchange during the processes of transpiration, respiration and photosynthesis.

Stomata are smaller in the night as there is no sunlight to carry out photosynthesis and transpiration. The stomata are surrounded by guard cells. These guard cells are sensitive to light and temperature. The guard cells keep the stomata open during the day and closed at night. If the stomata were open at night, there would be a water loss through the openings (transpiration). When there is no light, less water evaporates as the stomata remain closed. So based on Joey's study, the stomata change their size due to the presence or absence of light.
