Look at the diagram given below. It explains the working of a periscope. A periscope makes use of plane mirrors. A simple periscope can be used to see over obstacles such as walls. a) What is the nature of image formed when we see through a periscope? b) Give reason for the question asked in part ‘a’. c) Will the image be larger, smaller or of the same size as the object? Why?

a) The image formed in the periscope is a virtual image and erect. Light is always reflected from the mirrors which are present at the two edges of the periscope. Hence, the image formed in the periscope is not real it is virtual. b) As two plane mirrors are used in the periscope. These mirrors are fitted into each end of the tube at an angle of exactly at 45 ° , so that they face each other. The image formed will be upright, virtual, and same size. c) The size of the image is the same as the size of the object, as plane mirrors are used in periscope.

Look at the mirror image of the palm of the lady. Why is the image larger in size than her palm?

The mirror in the picture is a concave mirror. The image is larger than the original as the object moves towards the mirror. The concave mirror produces a virtual, upright, and magnified image when the object is kept closer to the mirror.

Look at the mirror image of the palm of the lady. What would happen if the lady stands at a little farther from the same mirror?

When the lady moves little far away from the concave mirror then the image formed will be real, inverted and magnified. Note: When the object is kept at focus, the real image is formed.
