The heavier liquid forms the lower layer whereas the lighter liquid forms the upper layer. These layers are collected in separate beakers. Examples of liquids separated by this method are as follows: 1 ) Oil and water, 2 ) Chloroform and water, 3 ) Mercury and water.

A separating funnel can not help to separate the miscible liquids. In the case of miscible liquids, where the densities of the constituent liquids are relatively the same and the mixture is homogenous. When we are left undisturbed, one will not obtain the liquids in the layer as there is not much difference in their densities.
