A typical cell consists of a cell membrane, cytoplasm and a nucleus. Cell wall is present outside the cytoplasm of cells in plants, fungi, bacteria, etc. The various microscopic structures present inside a cell that take part in the proper functioning of a cell are called cell organelles. The cell organelles are different in different types of cells. In prokaryotic cells, the membrane-bound organelles are absent. In eukaryotic cells, plant cells and animal cells are showing difference in their cell organelles. The major cell organelles that are commonly found in a typical eukaryotic cell are listed below:

Mitochondria: These are the membrane-enclosed organelle, generally called powerhouse of the cell.

Plastids: Present only in photosynthetic cells.

Lysosome: These are the single membrane-bound cell organelles that are is responsible for the controlled intracellular digestion of macromolecules.

Endoplasmic reticulum: ER is the double membrane-bound organelle which is the largest internal membrane system in the cytoplasm of the cell.

Golgi apparatus: It refers to stacks of single membrane-bound vesicle that is composed of sacs known as cisternae or saccules, tubules and vesicles.

Ribosome: The ribosome is the non-membranous organelle present in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.

Vacuole: These are the non-cytoplasmic areas bounded by a single membrane bilayer present in the cytoplasm.

Peroxisome: These are a kind of microbodies present in almost all eukaryotic cells.

Centrosome: It is present only in animal cell which contains two centrioles.

Nucleus: It is a double-membrane enclosed organelle found in most eukaryotic cells. It contains nucleolus and chromosomes.
