In the given image (a and b), calculate the actual width of the regions of cartilage in the trachea and in the bronchus. Give the formula you use. Show all your work and express your answer to the nearest micrometre.

The trachea is part of the human respiratory system and is also called the windpipe. It is a tube-like structure that consists of rings of hyaline cartilage.

Given in the image the transverse section of the trachea and the magnification is 65 times.

The diameter of the trachea is 1.8 cm.

The actual width of the trachea in the given image will be 1.8 $\times$ 65 = 117 cm =117 $\times$ 10 mm=1770 mm.

The trachea further divides into two bronchi that enter the lungs and further branch to form several bronchioles inside the lungs.

Given in the image the transverse section of the trachea and the magnification is 300 times.

The actual width of the bronchus is 1.2 cm.

Thus, the actual width of the bronchus in the given image will be 1.2 $\times$ 300 = 360 cm = 3600 mm.
