Lewis structure is a pictorial representation of the arrangement of valence electrons around the individual atoms in the molecule.

Steps to write the Lewis structure:

(i) Total number of valence electrons in ammonia molecule $= 5 + 3 = 8$

(ii) Nitrogen atom is more electronegative than hydrogen, hence nitrogen atom is placed in the centre, and all the hydrogen atoms are placed around the nitrogen atom.

(iii) Nitrogen atom shares three of its valence electrons to form a stable structure.

(iv) There are three nitrogen-hydrogen single bonds, and there is a non-bonding pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom.

Nitrogen with a pair of non-bonding electrons is a donor atom in an ammonia molecule.

Thus, Lewis structure of ammonia can be written as shown below:

Lewis structure of Water molecule:

(i) Total number of valence electrons in water molecule $= 6 + 2 = 8$

(ii) Oxygen atom is more electronegative than hydrogen, hence oxygen atom is placed in the centre, and all the hydrogen atoms are placed around the oxygen atom.

(iii) oxygen atom shares two of its valence electrons to form a stable structure.

(iv) There are two oxygen-hydrogen single bonds, and there are two non-bonding pairs of electrons on the oxygen atom.

Oxygen with two pairs of non-bonding electrons is a donor atom in a water molecule.

Thus, Lewis structure of water can be written as shown below:
