Magnets are materials that can attract iron objects from a distance. They are extracted from stones (iron ore) which are known as magnetite. When this stone is suspended in the air it aligns in the north-south direction. Hence, a magnet is called a leading stone or lode stone (directing). The magnet has the property of attraction and repulsion of another magnet depending on its pole. The magnets are of two types known as natural and artificial magnets.
