Why does the melting and freezing of material take place at the same temperature?

The fixed temperature at which a material changes its state from solid to liquid is called its melting point. Similarly, each liquid gets converted into a solid at some fixed temperature. During this process, the temperature of the liquid remains fixed even while it gives up heat. This fixed temperature is called the freezing point of that material.

When the material changes its state from solid to liquid or from liquid to solid the amount of heat gain or loss is always the same for the given material. The heat which is given to the material is first utilised to weaken the intermolecular force of attraction between the particles due to which the temperature of the material does not increase, as first, the heat gets absorbed by the molecules to weaken the force of attraction, then the conversion of state takes place by further absorption of heat and hence, we can say that the freezing and melting point of a given material takes place at the same temperature. For example, water can exist in the state of solid and liquid at the same temperature i.e., $0 {}^{\circ}C$ .
