Compost is made by the decomposition process. It is prepared by the decomposition of organic matter. Organic matter can be obtained from the remains of plants and animals. To make compost we can collect vegetable wastes from the kitchen, garbage, animal dung, etc. These are kept in a large pit for decomposition process by the microorganisms (e.g. bacteria, fungi, etc.). In this, animal wastes are put in less quantity. Pit made should be 1m deep. In that mixture of kitchen wastes like vegetable remains, peels of fruits, dry leaves, cattle dung are put in the pit. The layer of mixture should be of 30 cm. Then mixture of soil, water and cattle dung is sprinkled on the layer. Then again a new layer is formed. This layering process is continued till 50-60 cm depth of the pit is left, in which a mixture of cattle dung and water is put on the top and is covered tightly and left behind for 3-4 months. After the given period, crisp, dried compost is formed which can be used as manure for crops.
