From ancient times, India had a close relationship with distant lands. The Indian traders used to go to other countries with which they had trade relations.

King Ashoka sent missionaries to Sri Lanka to spread the message of Buddhism. Traders and scholars from other countries also came to India.

India had trade relations with Rome, Egypt, East Africa, Arabia, Greece, Iran, and Tibet. In Sangam literature, we also get to know about the expansion of India through trade.

Merchants of Kalinga, Saurashtra, Bengal, and Tamil Nadu established close contact with South- East Asia. The Kushanas earned well through Silk Route and started to mint gold coins.

Later conquerors were not able to establish good relationships with other countries which lead to loss of economic loss while in ancient times Indian goods were in great demand in the western market.
