Why it is important to have a general rule or formula for finding the volume of a prism?

A three dimensional object has three dimensions or measurements, such as a length, width, and height. An extra measurement means that objects can now be filled, and this is referred to as volume. The volume of a $3 D$ shape is defined as the amount of space it occupies. So, volume is a measure of the amount that can fit inside.

Suppose we have

The rectangular prism or cuboid is made up with $12$ small cube. So we can tell this the volume of the prism is $12$ cubic unit.

But we can not count the number of cube if we have a bigger rectangular prism. Also we can not find the volume of cuboidal box by counting the cube.

We also can calculate the volume in following way:

The number of cubes along length $= 3$

The number of cubes along breadth $= 2$

The number of cubes along height $= 2$

Volume of a cuboid $= length \times breadth \times height$

So, volume of the cuboid $= (3 \times 2 \times 2) = 12$ cubic unit

Therefore, we can find the volume by multiplying the length of three dimensions of a rectangular prism which is the easy way to find the volume of a rectangular prism of any size.
