How is finding the surface area of a three-dimensional shape similar to finding the area of compound two-dimensional shape? Explain.

As we know that every 3D shape can be flattened to two dimensions. As long as all the faces are connected somehow, these two-dimensional versions are called nets.

And the surface area of a three-dimensional shape is the area of all of its faces added together.

We can find the surface area of a 3D shape by using the formula or by adding the area of its faces.

By the way, the only way to get the surface area of all 3D Shapes is to add up the areas of all 2D shapes which together make that 3D shape.

If we want to find the surface area of a cube, then we have to add the area of its faces.

As the cube has the six square faces and the area of a square $= a^{2}$ (let the side of the cube be $a$ )

Therefore, the surface area of the cube is $= a^{2} + a^{2} + a^{2} + a^{2} + a^{2} + a^{2} = 6 a^{2}$ .

Thus, we can say that finding the surface area of a three-dimensional shape is similar to finding the area of compound two-dimensional shape.
