Osmosis is the process of movement of solvent molecules from the region of their higher concentration to the region of their lower concentration in the presence of a semipermeable membrane. An example of osmosis occurs when a sugar solution and water are separated by a semipermeable membrane.

Endocytosis is the process of uptake of food material from outside by the invagination of the plasma membrane. The material surrounded by the cell membrane, buds off and form a vesicle. If the food material is a liquid, known as pinocytosis, and if it is a solid particle, then it is known as phagocytosis.

Exocytosis is the process of moving materials from within a cell to the exterior of the cell. This process requires energy and is therefore a type of active transport. In exocytosis, membrane-bound vesicles containing cellular molecules are transported to the cell membrane. The vesicles fuse with the cell membrane and expel their contents to the exterior of the cell.
