An earthquake occurs when two large pieces of the earth's crust suddenly slip. The point under the ground where the vibrations originate is called the focus of the earthquake. Seismic waves started from that point. The magnitude of an earthquake is measured on Richter scale. The numbers on this scale range from one to ten. Earthquake below six are considered as moderate and those above six are considered as severe. Earthquakes usually occur on the edges of large sections of the earth's crust.
