In sewage treatment, the microbes are used for the reduction of the complex organic matter into simpler organic matter in the sewage water. The bacterial cells and the filaments of fungal species are combined and associated to form a mesh or network-like structure that is called flocs. These organisms carry out the reduction of the organic matter and help to reduce the BOD (Biological oxygen demand) of the sewage water.
