a-ii Potatoes are examples of stem tubers. These tubers have small depressions on them known as 'eyes' from which new plants germinate. b-iii Parts of some plants are modified to perform special functions. An onion is an example of a bulb which is a modified stem. When scaly leaves are thick and fleshy as in onion, then their function is to store water and food. c-iv Stems of some plants are modified to perform special functions. Ginger is an example of a rhizome, which is a stem modification. d-v Leaves are modified into slender, often closely coiled structures known as tendrils in climbers. They have a very weak stem, hence take the support of other plants to grow. Example- Glory lily. e-i Leaves of certain plants become wholly or partially modified into sharp, pointed structures known as spines. Example- cactus. It is a plant that is seen in the deserts.
