Pure substances are classified into elements and compounds. Elements are further classified into metal, non-metals and metalloids. Iron is a metal and sulphur is a non-metal. These two are the elements mentioned because they are made from the same kind of atoms. Iron contains only iron atoms and sulphur contains only sulphur atoms throughout its structure.

A teacher heats together iron and sulphur. Iron sulphide is produced. This is a chemical reaction. Explain what this means.

When iron and sulphur are heated together the old bonds break and forms a new bond between the two elements to form a compound, iron sulphide. It is a chemical change where a new substance is formed. Properties of iron sulphide are different from its constituents and these constituents can't be easily separated to get them back.
