Alloys are mixtures of metals or metals with non-metals. They are made by heating two or more metals together. The formation of alloy disrupts the regular lattice of pure metal. As shown in the diagram, the regular structure of the metal iron gets changed due to the presence of other atoms. This makes it more difficult for the layers of the pure metal to slide over each other. Thus, an alloy is harder and less malleable than pure metal (in which the layers slip over each other more easily). Hence, steel is less malleable than pure iron.
