Describe the plans for the experiment that shows that photosynthesis requires light.

Accepted Answer

1) Select a healthy potted plant and place it in a dark room for at least 24-48 hours.

2) After 48 hours, cover a part of the leaf of the plant from both upper and lower sides with aluminum foil.

3) Now, take the plant in sunlight for at least 3-4 hours. After 3-4 hours, pluck the leaf which was covered from aluminum foil and remove the foil.

4) Boil this leaf in water for 2-3 minutes.

5) Transfer the leaf from the boiling beaker to another beaker containing ethanol and boil the leaf in a water bath. This step leads to the removal of chlorophyll.

6) Remove the leaf and wash it in water at room temperature.

7) Place this leaf on a white tile and add few drops of iodine solution over the decolorized leaf.

8) You can observe that the area of the leaf that was uncovered performed photosynthesis and will show a blue-black color to confirm the presence of starch, and the covered portion of the leaf remains yellow as it does not perform photosynthesis.
