The genes are the hereditary units which remain arranged in the linear fashion on the DNA string. A dominant gene is the result of dominant alleles in the chromosomes. A dominant gene is defined as the gene which expresses itself in the phenotype and suppresses the expression of another gene when the two varieties of characters are crossed together. This can be explained by the following example:

The plant height is one of its seven visible characters. The tall is represented by the gene TT and the dwarf is represented by the gene tt. The plants with two different heights are crossed together and the variety (tall or dwarf) which express in the first generation is considered as the dominant and the gene responsible for the variety of the trait is called the dominant gene. Since in Mendelian experiment, it has been observed that all the pea plants of first-generation all tall in height, therefore tall plants are dominant over dwarf plants. Moreover, in a heterozygous genotype, the allele for the tall will suppress the expression of the allele for the dwarf.
