On the basis of cell shape and arrangement, epithelial tissues are classified as:

1. Squamous epithelium - It forms the skin of an organism. They are of two types, simple squamous epithelium and stratified squamous epithelium. These tissues help in the protection of the body.

2. Cuboidal epithelium - It forms the lining of the duct of the salivary glands and kidney tubules and also provides mechanical support to these structures.

3. Columnar epithelium - Cells that make up columnar epithelium are tall-pillar like cells having elongated nuclei. These cells line the inner lining of the intestines where absorption of food takes place.

4. Ciliated columnar epithelium - They are similar to columnar epithelium tissues but possess hair-like projections called cilia. This epithelium is present in the respiratory tract and also lines the oviduct that is the tube through which an ovum passes from an ovary.

5. Glandular epithelium - It plays an important role in preventing cells from drying, absorption of water and nutrients, diffusion of gases, etc.
