A flower arises from the floral bud on the stem and is attached on the axis by a structure called pedicel. The pedicel continues to form a slightly swollen tip called receptacle. The receptacle bears the four consecutive whorls of flower - calyx, corolla, androecium, and gynoecium.
\n\n
Calyx: This is the outermost whorl of a flower consisting of green, leaf-like parts called sepals. The sepals protect the flower when it is in the form of a bud in the initial stage. Sepals may either be separate from one another or joined together.
\n\n
Corolla: This is the second whorl of a flower consisting of colourful ring of petals. The petals lie inside the sepals. The petals are usually scented. The function of petals is to attract insects (for pollination) and to protect the reproductive organs which are at the centre of the flower.

Androecium: This is the male reproductive part of a flower consisting of little stalks with swollen tops called stamens. The stalk of stamen is called filament and the swollen top of stamen is called anther. Anther makes the pollen grains and stores them. Pollen grains contain the male gametes (or male sex cells) of the plant.
\n\n
Gynoecium: This is the female reproductive part of a flower consisting of carpels or pistils. The number of carpels varies from one to many. Each carpel consists of three parts: stigma, style and ovary.
\n\n
\n\t
Stigma: The top, swollen tip of a pistil is called stigma. It is very sticky so that pollens can stick to it.
\n\t
Style: The middle part of a pistil is called style. It is a tube which connects stigma to ovary.
\n\t
Ovary: The swollen part at the bottom of the pistil is called ovary. The ovary contains tiny, egg-like structures called ovules. The ovules contain female sex cells of a plant.
