In certain cases, common people were also forced to join the army of the rulers. In case of change of dynasties, the masses were forced to submit to new rulers and accept their traditions and culture.

The peasants were also affected during prolonged wars and battles. Hence, continuous battles led to social disruptions and famines. Famines were a common phenomenon during the period of the Cholas. The early medieval period also witnessed many peasant revolts.
