According to scholars, the decline of the Mughals occurred because of the following reasons:

Aurangzeb lacked the politicial skill or statesmanship of his predecessors. However, the extent of the empire had also expanded. Hence, it created a lot of pressure on the emperor to manage the administration of such a huge empire.

On the other hand, the rigid policies of Aurangzeb also led the Jats, Sikhs and Marathas to rebel against the Mughal empire. Hence, it created upheaval and affected the stability of the empire.

According to scholars, the glory of an empire depends on the following factors:

The Mughal Emperor's after Aurangzeb were weak and could not follow on the footsteps of their predecessors. On the other hand, the nobles of the empire were also divided into two factions - the Iranis and the Turanis.

The glory of the empire declined because the later Mughals were considered as puppets in the hand of powerful groups. For instance, Farrukh Siyar and Alamgir II were assassinated by their nobles.
