Soil is the top layer of the earth's surface where plants grow. This is very important for all life forms living on the earth. The soil contains tiny particles of rock, fine grains of sand, dead plants and animals along with air, water and microorganisms.

Humus is formed by dead and decaying bits of plants and animals. Humus is formed when the animals living in the soil eat the dead plants and animals and mix them with the soil. It also contains many useful nutrients for the plants that are required for growth.
