Physical properties of metals

Metals show lustrous and shiny appearance. This is happened due to the excitation of electrons. When the electrons in excited state returned back to its original state, it emits radiation in the form of photons, which make the metals to shine.

Metals possess malleability and ductility.

Metals are normally conductors of electricity and heat (for example like $Cu, Ag, Au$ , etc). But the example like $Pb$ and $Hg$ are poor conductor of heat.

Metals are generally having high boiling and melting point.

Metals are mostly solid at room temperature (except $Hg$ and $Ga$ ). Generally, they are hard, but examples such as potassium and sodium are soft.

Chemical properties of metals

Metals are electropositive elements because it loses electron and shifts to a positive ion.

Metals show different chemical properties. This is due to electrons in the outermost shell of metals.

Metals react with oxygen to form metals oxide. Here, the metals donate the electrons to oxygen. The metals like potassium and sodium reacts with air due to its high electro-positivity. The thin layer of oxide is formed for metals like $Mg, Zn$ and $Al$ at room temperature. The metals such as iron and remaining below in the metal activity series react with oxygen when heated in air.

Metals react with water forming metal hydroxides or oxides and di hydrogen gas. The example such as $Na, K, Ca$ and $Li$ are forming hydroxide with cold water and $Mg$ doesn't react with cold water, but react with hot water forming hydroxide. Likewise $Al, Zn$ and $Fe$ react with steam water forming c0rrespondig hydroxides. The metals like $Pb, Cu, Ag$ and $Au$ don't react with cold water or steam water.

Metals react with dilute hydrochloric acid, dilute nitric acid and dilute sulphuric acid forming metallic chlorides, metallic nitrates and metallic sulphates, respectively and di hydrogen gas. But, all the metals don't react with dilute hydrochloric acid and dilute nitric acid.
