During secondary treatment, organic solids such as faeces get settled at the bottom and are removed by using a scraper . This is called sludge.

The sludge is separated and stored in a large closed tank called sludge digester or bioreactors, where it is decomposed by the action of anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that can respire without oxygen). These anaerobes produce biogas (methane) by fermentation. Biogas is used as a fuel.
