Explain about two advantages of the phylogenetic system of classification.

The phylogenetic system of classification was initiated by Engler and Prantl. It is based on the fossil records of different areas of studies like anatomy, morphology, physiology, etc. Here, the flowering plants are placed in ascending series related to the complexity of floral morphology. This type of classification is achieved by analysing the DNA between the organisms and their ancestors.

The main advantage of phylogenetic classification is that this system is in conformation with the modern views of the phylogeny. Hence, in this system, the rearrangement of taxonomic characters are taken place based on the evolutionary relationship of organisms. Families and order in this system are of small size.

The phylogenetic system of classification use information from various resources to solve the problem of classification. Such information becomes more important in the absence of supporting fossil evidence. But, it may happen that the DNA from the ancestors are unavailable due to extinction of the species and loss of the fossil records. Hence, plant identification is not possible. It is the main disadvantage of this system.
