Plastic bags are mostly used for carrying things. But now-a-days the government has put a ban on using plastic bags. Why government does so? What are its benefits? Justify your answer.

Plastic bags are lightweight, water-resistant and more durable than paper bags. So, they are mostly used for carrying things in our day-to-day life. But, plastic bags are non-biodegradable. They are not easily decomposed by microorganisms in the environment. So, plastic bag litter is a major problem. They remain in the soil for years, reduce soil fertility and obstruct water seepage. Thus, they pollute water as well as land. They are not environment friendly. Moreover plastic bags are manufactured from polypropylene which is a material manufactured from non-renewable sources like mineral oil and petroleum. Therefore, due to such reasons, the government has put a ban on using plastic bags now-a-days.

The biggest benefit of banning plastic bags is to protect our ecosystem. It helps to reduce environmental pollution. It will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute towards climate change. The losses in the fishing industry and tourism, as well as the cost to clean up beaches, will go down as well. Nonrenewable sources like mineral oil and petroleum will be preserved which are used to manufacture plastics. Thus, there are many benefits of banning plastic bags.
