Changes in girls during puberty:

1. Development of sex organs: During puberty, the primary reproductive organs i.e. ovaries of girls become mature and functionally active. The ovaries start producing eggs or ova every month which is a signal that the female can reproduce and give birth to the child.

2. Initiation of menstruation: The bleeding from the uterus which occurs in women (or mature girl) every month (if the egg cell has not been fertilised) is called menstrual flow or menstruation.

3. Increase in height: There is an intense increase in the rate of growth and height during puberty. This growth occurs in all the long bones. This rapid increase in pubertal growth begins on average at 9-10 years for girls.

4. Growth of hairs: These include growth of hairs on hands, legs, growth of pubic hairs, growth of underarm hairs.

5. Development of breasts: Estrogen hormone released during puberty also causes enlargement of breasts in females.

6. Increased activity of sweat and sebaceous gland: The level of hormones in girls rises too much at the age of puberty. These hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands and sweat glands present in the skin. The sebaceous glands, therefore secrete more oil and the sweat glands secrete more sweat. The excess oil and sweat get collected in the tiny pores of the skin and stimulate the growth of bacteria causing the swelling and redness of the skin which leads to the formation of pimples. The sudden occurrence of too many pimples is considered acne.

7. The hips become widen in females due to the enlargement of the pelvic girdle.
8. Puberty also brings changes in the size of the voice box. The voice box is small in girls, which leads to the high-pitched voice in them.
