(b) Christmas tree lamps are usually wired in series. What happens if one lamp breaks?

(c) An electrician has wired a house in such a way that if a lamp gets fused in one room of the house, all the lamps in other rooms of the house stop working. What is the defect in the wiring?

(d) Draw a circuit diagram showing two electric lamps connected in parallel together with a cell and a switch that works with both lamps.

Mark an (A) on your diagram to show where an ammeter should be placed to measure the current.

(a) Parallel circuits

Note: Parallel connection is preferred in domestic circuits because, if one electrical appliance stops working due to some defect, then all other appliances in the circuit will still keep working properly. Also, in a parallel circuit, each appliance has its own switch and thus can be turned on and off individually.

(b) If one of the lamp in a christmas tree lamp, the all the other lamps will stop glowing. This is because the current has only one path to flow in a series circuit.

(c) All lamps are connected in series. In a series circuit, all the appliances have only one switch.

(d)

Ammeter is always connected in series in a circuit.
