Look at figure 1.3. Explain why these plant cells are adapted in this way.

Plant cells have a thick waxy layer called cuticle which allows sunlight to pass through, and it also minimises water loss. There are air spaces in the spongy mesophyll which allow gas exchange to occur. It allows the entry of carbon dioxide for the process of photosynthesis to occur. The palisade mesophyll layer of the leaf is adapted to absorb light efficiently. The cells are packed with many chloroplasts.
