Given system of equations are, x a - y b = 0 ⇒ b x - a y = 0 . . . . ( i ) a x + b y = a 2 + b 2 . . . . ( ii ) Steps for applying the elimination method: 1 . Multiply one or both the equations (if necessary) by a suitable number, to transform them so that addition or subtraction will eliminate one variable. 2 . Solve the resulting single variable equation and substitute this value into either of the two original equations and solve it to find the value of the second variable. Multiplying b to equation ( i ) and a to equation ( ii ) , we get, b 2 x - a b y = 0 . . . . ( iii ) a 2 x + a b y = a a 2 + b 2 . . . . ( iv ) Adding ( iii ) and ( iv ) ,we have, x a 2 + b 2 = a a 2 + b 2 ⇒ x = a Substituting the value of x in equation ( i ) , we get a b - a y = 0 ⇒ y = b Therefore, x = a , y = b are the solution for the given system of equations.
