How is metallic bonding different to ionic and covalent bonding?

Each type of bonding—ionic, covalent and metallic—has its own distinct features. Metallic bonding, like ionic and covalent bonding, can be represented using electron sea model.

The valence electrons involved in ionic bonding are localized on the individual ions. This means that they are not free to move in any of the states of matter. They remain a part of the structure of the ions. In covalent compounds, valence electrons that are the shared pairs of electrons within the bond are again localized. They create electron density in and around the internuclear axis.

But the valence electrons in metals are delocalised as the outer electron shells of each metal atom are only weakly held to a positively charged nucleus, so they are free to move throughout the metal; this is unlike electrons in ionic and covalent bonding
