Why an injury to the right cerebrum affects the functioning of the left side of body?

Cerebrum is a largest part of the brain, making up about 85 % of total brain. It is divided into right and left cerebral hemisphere by means of a deep median, long fissure. The two hemispheres internally connected to each other by corpus callosum.

Frontal lobes of cerebrum have motor area which controls voluntary motor activities or movements of muscles. The premotor area is higher centre for involuntary movements and autonomus nervous system.

Each side of the cerebrum controls movement of the opposite side of the body. The left half controls movement and sensation on the right side of the body, and the right half controls movement and sensation on the left side. Thus, damage to the right side of the brain may cause movement problems or weakness on the body's left side.
